Farewell is a chapter in a unique narrative.
Some see death not as an end, but as a passage — a change in the way life continues, where love remains, and memory continues to give meaning to the story of the one who has departed.

At Celebrantes, we create personalised farewell ceremonies that honour the life, legacy and essence of those who have passed — people and companion animals who left a profound mark on the lives of those who knew them.

Each ceremony is prepared with care and sensitivity so that the final tribute reflects the shared history and the bonds that remain in the memory of those left behind.

Our Process

Each ceremony is born from a process of listening, care, and preparation.

Our work unfolds in four fundamental stages:

1. Listen

We meet with family members or close friends to learn about the life, values and personality of the person being honoured.
This is the moment to gather memories, stories and meaningful references that will form the foundation of the ceremony’s narrative.

2. Creation

Based on the information shared, we write an original and personalised script.
We also suggest readings, music and symbolic elements that resonate with the family, ensuring that every word reflects the truth of the life being honoured.

3. Curatorship

We support the organisation of the different moments of the ceremony, from selecting readings to coordinating tributes by family members or friends who wish to share a few words.

4. Celebration

On the day of the ceremony, the Celebrant leads the moment with dignity, empathy and sensitivity.
Our role is to ensure that the focus remains on the life being honoured and the memories that bring people together in farewell.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Clarifying so you can decide with peace of mind

Planning a farewell ceremony during a time of bereavement can raise many questions, especially when considering an alternative to traditional ceremonies. Here, we have gathered answers to some of the most common questions so you can better understand how our celebrant services can help your family create a meaningful tribute.

What does a Funeral

Celebrant do?

A funeral celebrant is a professional who designs and leads a personalised farewell ceremony. The ceremony focuses on the life, values and legacy of the person being honoured.

Unlike a traditional religious service, our ceremonies are fully personalised and non-denominational, ensuring that every word reflects the unique story of the life being remembered.

What is the difference between a celebrant and a funeral home?

The funeral home manages the practical arrangements, including logistics, documentation and care of the body.

The celebrant focuses on the ceremony itself — listening to the family, preparing the narrative and guiding the farewell. We often work alongside the funeral director you choose, while remaining an independent service dedicated to the ceremony.

Can the ceremony include

religious elements?

Our approach is humanistic and non-denominational. However, we respect the diversity of beliefs and traditions.

If the family wishes, the ceremony may include a moment of silence, a reading, a prayer or music that reflects the spirituality of the person being remembered, while keeping the focus on their life story and legacy.

Where can the ceremony

be held?

We conduct ceremonies in funeral chapels, crematoria and cemeteries, as well as in less conventional locations such as private gardens, family homes or places with special meaning.

(Available within mainland Portugal.)

How can a ceremony be prepared in such a short time?

Our methodology, informed by the professional standards of the APC (UK), is designed to work effectively even within short timeframes.

Through a focused conversation with the family, we are able to capture the essence of the life story and prepare an original ceremony script within 24 to 48 hours, adapting to the typical timelines of funeral arrangements in Portugal.

Can family members or friends read the text during the ceremony?

Yes. We offer a writing service for those who would like a professionally prepared tribute but prefer it to be read by someone close to them.

In these cases, we provide the complete script together with clear reading notes to support a confident and meaningful delivery.

Is it possible to hold a farewell ceremony for a companion animal?

Yes. Many guardians feel the need to mark the farewell of a companion animal who was part of the family.

The ceremony may include words of tribute, moments of silence, music or small symbolic gestures that honour the bond shared.

Where can a ceremony for a companion animal be held?

The ceremony may take place in a garden, a private venue, in nature, or anywhere that holds special meaning for the family and the memory of the animal.

Can family members, including children, take part in the ceremony?

Yes. If the family wishes, everyone may take part through readings, memories or small symbolic gestures. These moments often help in the emotional process of saying farewell.

What is an

Online Tribute?

An Online Tribute is a digital space dedicated to the memory of someone who has passed away, where texts, photographs, messages and shared memories can be gathered.

Who can contribute to the online memorial?

Family members, friends and others close to the person may share messages, memories or photographs, creating a shared space of remembrance.

How can people access the

online memorial?

The memorial is accessed through a dedicated page that can easily be shared with family and friends via a link or a QR code.

New Service in Preparation

We are currently developing a specialised service dedicated to humanist farewell ceremonies and personalised memorials.

The Celebrantes team is presently undertaking internationally certified training and preparing a network of qualified celebrants to support families with sensitivity, care and professionalism.

The official launch of this service will be announced soon.
